Tunxi Tea（屯绿）

Tunxi Green Tea, also known as Tunlu tea,Tunlv tea- and used to be called as Twankay(Twankey)tea is one kind of quality green teas produced in China. Tunxi tea is being praised as 'Green Gold'. Along with keemun tea which is also produced in the same Huangshan area,they are referred to as 'Qimen red,Tunxi green‘"祁红屯绿”.

With excellent flavor and taste among the same kinds of green tea,Twankay tea （屯绿）became worldwide known around 7th century and has been exported abroad in a large scale since the beginning of 16th century, Twankey tea（屯绿） has been valued in four aspects - green color, clear brew, mellow taste, and long-lasting aftertaste.

The finished Tunlu tea is in tightly rolled and kinked shape that reminds you of eyebrow. Its distinctive appearance gave birth to the name of some of the sub-varieties of Tunlv tea such as(in English): Precious Eyebrow, Tribute, Needle, First Rain, and Green Flake.

Tunxi green tea can be divided into two categories: tea leaves that are roasted in an oven is named as roasted green tea and the other that are pan-fired (this is sometimes mistakenly written/ edited as "pan-fried"), i.e., "stir-fried" in a wok (fear not, no oil is used!)named as fired green tea. Pan firing is one of the tea-curing techniques that drives out the greatest amount of moisture and hence produces more concentrated tea with a stronger, yet subtle taste (some have said that pan-fired green tea has a nutty flavor while others have named the nut: chestnut).

The picking standard for Tunlv tea is one shoot with one, two, or three young leaves,resulting in different final grades. For the above montioned six varieties,each of them has at least five grades. Tunxi tea looks different in appearance by its varieties or grades while always with the similar mellowness.

The producing area of Tunxi tea includes four neighboring counties around Tunxi. Because teas from other counties were packed and shipped for export from here in the past, they are collectively called 'Tunxi Green Tea'. Surrounded by range upon range of mountains, Tun-xi,county is the first stop to Mt. Yellow, a scenery resort listed as The World Nature and Culture Heritage by UNESCO in 1990. Teas are planted on hillside from 300 to 2000 ft in elevation. Its fertile yellow earth, plenty of rainfall, and warm temperature provide favorable growing environment for tea.

Now,since the founding of the Republic of China,Tunxi county has became Tunxi District,an urban area where the Huangshan municipal government is located in. Tunxi tea now is mainly referred to tea producing in She county and Xiuling county. In fact,Xiuling county,along with its neighboring Kaihua and Wuyuan counties,are called as Golden Triangle of chinese green tea. In many tea experts' eyes,green tea produced here boasts exceptional quality.
